Jamie Cashion Receives Promotion to 9th Degree Black Belt in Historic Ceremony

In a powerful and emotional ceremony held on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the Open Door Ministries auditorium in Burleson, Texas, American Karate Grandmaster Jamie Cashion was promoted to 9th Degree Black Belt in front of a record-setting crowd. The event, which was originally intended to celebrate Jamie Cashion’s promotion to 8th Degree, transformed into a moment of historic significance when Grandmaster Pat Burleson, moved by the overwhelming show of respect and admiration in the room, announced the surprise promotion to 9th Degree.

More than 500 guests were in attendance, including over 300 American Karate black belt holders. Among them were 40 Senior 10th Degree Black Belts, making it one of the largest gatherings of high-ranking martial artists ever assembled for a single person’s promotion. The ceremony became an unforgettable night not only for Jamie Cashion but also for the entire martial arts community.

Jamie Cashion Honored by the Martial Arts Elite

The evening began with a moving video tribute that reflected on Jamie Cashion’s near-death experience as a teenager. At just 16 years old, Jamie Cashion suffered severe burns while fighting a grass fire, an event that would shape his life and his commitment to service. That early trauma instilled in him a passion for helping others, which has guided his work around the world in countries such as Uganda, Brazil, Peru, Columbia, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

Locally, Jamie Cashion has continued to serve through his work as a first responder. He was part of a heroic rescue team during Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas, and has consistently supported his community through disaster response, charity events, and mentoring programs.

The promotion ceremony, emceed by martial arts leader George Minshew, featured heartfelt speeches from legendary martial artists including Derrick Hayes, Joe Corley, Bob Wall, and World Champion Jeff Smith. It was Jeff Smith who captured the sentiment of the night when he stated, “No one has given back more in the martial arts than Jamie Cashion.”

The Moment That Changed Everything

Although the event was planned as a celebration of Jamie Cashion’s advancement from 7th to 8th Degree, the spirit in the room clearly demanded more. Grandmaster Pat Burleson, visibly moved by the stories and the love shown, announced his decision to promote Jamie Cashion to 9th Degree Black Belt on the spot. The announcement was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

To affirm the decision, Grandmaster Burleson called on the attending 10th Degree Black Belts for a show of support. Every hand in the room was raised. The moment underscored the deep respect Jamie Cashion has earned from the most senior figures in the martial arts world.

Among the many prominent 10th Degree Black Belts present were Allen Steen, Jim Harrison, Ed Daniel, Fred Simon, Keith Yates, Pat Worley, Jim Butin, Daryl Stewart, Gary Lee, Richard Jenkins, Bill Watson, Fred Wren, Tony Lopez, Al Francis, Billy Smith, Steve Parks, Ted Gambordella, Linda Denley, Phil Whilman, and Rudy Smedley. Their attendance and unanimous approval made the promotion even more significant.

Jamie Cashion’s Legacy Continues to Grow

Jamie Cashion has spent more than three decades in the martial arts as a student, teacher, mentor, and global advocate for service through discipline. His reputation as a compassionate leader is matched only by his technical excellence in American Karate.

Reflecting on the night, Jamie Cashion said, “I will tell you, this night will remain one of the highlights of my life. God has truly opened up so many opportunities for me to share love and compassion through the martial arts. He has given me a servant’s heart, and I do what I do for the love of others. This, simply put, has been a blessing.”
