Understanding Agentic AI and Technical Debt

Agentic AI and technical debt are two ideas that help us understand how technology is changing. They may sound complicated at first, but they become much clearer when you look at what they mean in everyday life. As technology grows, both ideas will shape how companies work, how software is built, and how people interact with computers. In fact, as of 2025, 78 percent of companies have adopted AI technologies, showing just how widespread artificial intelligence has become in the business world.

Agentic AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can plan, make decisions, and take actions on its own to reach a goal. Instead of waiting for a person to explain every little step, it can figure out many steps by itself. For example, imagine asking a regular program to make a poster. You would have to explain the exact size, the colors, the layout, the images, and the words. If you do not give all the instructions, the program cannot finish the job. But if you ask an agentic AI to make a poster about recycling, it can look up facts, choose a layout, write text, make images, and place everything together in a neat design. These two ideas connect in interesting ways. Agentic AI will depend on huge amounts of software. If the software underneath is messy or full of old shortcuts, the AI may be slower or less reliable. It can move data smoothly, fix clunky steps, and remove the manual tasks that often create more debt. This makes it possible to improve technology while keeping customers happy and operations stable.

In the future, agentic AI will become even more independent. It will help people handle long or complicated tasks, understand what users want, and work in many fields such as science, education, and health. People will still guide it, but the AI will take on more planning and problem solving. At the same time, technical debt will remain a serious challenge as software grows larger and older. Companies will need to focus on keeping their systems clean, organized, and safe.

Over time, people will learn to work with agentic AI. Clean code, steady maintenance, and smart planning will become more important than ever. Agentic AI will help us move faster and do more, but only if the foundation beneath it is strong.
