Some 8,380 megawatts were put into service in the fourth quarter.
The PTC was ultimately extended by Congress to projects that begin construction in 2013, but that action was not taken until Jan. 1 as part of the fiscal cliff bill that included a package of tax break extensions.
Last year was also the first in which renewable energy sources led in new generation, AWEA interim CEO Rob Gramlich said in a conference call with reporters. Wind accounted for 42 percent of new capacity.
