Syria's opposition coalition has given halting support to a proposal made last week by opposition leader Sheik Ahmad Moaz al-Khatib, under which dialogue between anti-government rebels and the Bashar al-Assad regime would proceed with an eye toward Assad leaving the country rather than facing trial. Various regime officials have responded coolly or not at all to the offer. The New York Times reports.
