The number of vehicles used by the federal government has increased overall; but several agencies have reduced their number of vehicles according to an investigation by the Government Accountability Office.
Since 2005, the number of vehicles has increased by about seven percent from 420,000 to 449,000. That number excludes Post Office vehicles and military vehicles used by the Pentagon.
The Departments of Agriculture and Veterans Affairs increased their vehicle fleets, the report found, while the Interior Department and Air Force decreased theirs.
Overall, the percentage of alternate-fuel vehicles rose from 14 to 33 percent of the total fleet.
