Iran Accused of Building Military Base in Sudan

UPDATED 7:27 AM EST, December 11, 2012

Iran is establishing a Red Sea military base in Sudan, according to an anti-government Sudanese media outlet citing unnamed opposition groups. The accusations of a secret deal come in the aftermath of two Iranian naval vessels docking in Port Sudan over the weekend, and if confirmed would mark another advance for Tehran in projecting naval power into the region. The close alliance between Khartoum and the Iranian regime, dating back at least as far as a military cooperation agreement signed in March 2008, is leveraged by Tehran to penetrate Africa and provide weapons to its Palestinian proxy Hamas and its Lebanese proxy Hezbollah. The Jerusalem Post conveys the reports.
