EPA opens fresh biofuels debate with 2013 RFS targets

UPDATED 19:56 PM EST, January 31, 2013

The proposals come as the industry and opponents of the RFS square off over the future of the standard, driven in part by market saturation of corn-based ethanol. Meeting the RFS target of 36 billion gallons of biofuels use by 2020 will require higher level blends of corn-based ethanol in gasoline and more advanced biofuel use.

For 2013, EPA proposed an overall total of 16.55 billion gallons to be used in transportation, compared to 15.2 billion gallons last year. The 2013 target includes increases in the use of advanced biofuels, biomass-based diesel and cellulosic biofuels.
