Beijing Approved "Board and Search" In South China Sea

Beijing's new "board and search" regulations, which permit Chinese naval officers to interfere with vessels near the disputed island of Hainan, were according to Reuters a "local initiative" that received approval from Beijing. Analysis conducted elsewhere indicated that this in few ways distinguished the regulations from other Chinese efforts to assert sovereignty over the energy-rich South China Sea.
